Wisconsin Old Fashioned
The brandy old fashioned is a symbol of Wisconsin. So much so, it was made the state’s official cocktail in 2023. It’s the use of brandy, instead of whiskey, that gives the drink its Wisconsin twist and a sweeter, smoother taste. The precise proportions of ingredients in this classic beverage may vary around the state. This variation is sourced from a Green Bay native.
Ingredients:
Brandy
7UP
7UP is the standard, but can be substituted for a different lemon lime soda. For a sour old fashioned, use Squirt.
Maraschino cherries
Orange slice
Sugar
Bitters
Ice
Directions:
Add 1-2 maraschino cherries, an orange slice, and 6-7 dashes of bitters to your glass. Add a pinch of sugar and a bit of the maraschino cherry syrup to taste. Muddle the cherries, orange slice, bitters, sugar, and syrup. Pour a splash of 7UP and stir. Fill your glass to the top with ice. Add brandy, typically 1.5–2 fl oz. Fill the rest of the glass with 7UP. Stir again. Enjoy!
